The Importance of Physical Space
Physical space is an indispensable element of The Action Lab's work. The opportunity to gather, create, innovate, strategize, learn, and collaborate is a central pillar of many of our programs. The collective energy generated when individuals come together fosters a wealth of ideas and synergy that greatly exceeds what can be achieved in isolation.
A Natural Setting for Building Community and Strategizing
The Action Lab’s Ossining center sits on land native to the Munsee Lenape and Wappinger tribes in Ossining, NY. A rustic farmhouse from the 1800s, the building and grounds sit on 16 acres of lush woodlands and overlook a large and peaceful pond. Throughout the property there is abundant natural light, gorgeous views, quiet trails, spacious courtyards and intimate areas for discussion, planning and connection.
Our Ossining space regularly hosts convenings, workshops, and retreats as a part of The Action Lab’s rich array of ongoing work, and that of our partners. The space can accommodate up to 50 individuals for day gatherings, and can sleep up to 15.
Coming soon: A New Space for the Arts & Organizing
In the Spring of 2025, The Action Lab will open the doors to a brand new space in New York City, on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. The Center for Social Justice and the Arts will be a multigenerational community, arts and cultural production hub that will create opportunities for organizers, artists and change-makers to build community and power. The space will include flexible, multi-use areas for events and programming developed in close collaboration with our partners and the broad social justice community, including gatherings, exhibitions, concerts, talks and a wide array of social justice and cultural offerings.
The new space will also be the home for a new artist residency, allowing a rotating group of artists rooted in social justice work to be supported and be deeply immersed in the various elements of The Action Lab’s programming that most resonate with their work. Resident artists and fellows connected to the Center for Social Justice and the Arts at The Action Lab will have access to the facility’s recording studio, exhibition space, and performance area, making it a nimble home that can serve as both a new organizing hub and a cultural site.
