Jasiri X

Jasiri X is an independent hip-hop artist, educator, Pittsburgh community leader, and activist. In 2010, he founded 1Hood Media Academy, where he leads a team of educators and artists animated by a mission to build liberated communities through art, education, and social justice. In 2016, he received an honorary doctorate from Chicago Theological Seminary. He received the Nathan Cummings Foundation Fellowship to start the 1Hood Artivist Academy. Jasiri is also a recipient of the USA Cummings Fellowship in Music, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artist as Activist Fellowship, and the President's Volunteer Service Award. A 6 time Pittsburgh Hip-Hop Award winner and recipient of the BMe Leader Award, Unsung Hero Award, and New Pittsburgh Courier Men of Excellence Award. He was also a mentee and collaborator of our late founding board member, Harry Belafonte, so we could not be more thrilled to have him join as an advisory board member.
