Child care providers, families, and advocates rally at City Hall Park in New York City during a Providers Organized for Power campaign calling for affordable child care and fair wages for Family Child Care providers.

Providers Organized for Power united child care providers, families, advocates, and elected officials this spring to advance affordable child care, fair wages, and stronger public investment across New York City.

Child care providers, families, and advocates rally at City Hall Park in New York City during a Providers Organized for Power campaign calling for affordable child care and fair wages for Family Child Care providers.

This spring, The Action Lab and our partners in the Providers Organized for Power (POP) coalition brought together child care providers, families, advocates, and elected officials to strengthen the movement for affordable child care and fair compensation for the workers who make it possible.

On May 11, POP joined organizations across the country for Imagine A Day Without Child Care, a national day of action highlighting the essential role child care providers play in supporting families, communities, and local economies. At City Hall Park, providers and families gathered to draw attention to New York City's child care crisis and call for meaningful public investments that expand access to care and improve wages for Family Child Care providers.

The coalition continues to advocate for investments that reduce the Child Care Assistance Program waitlist, which affects tens of thousands of eligible families, while ensuring Family Child Care providers receive the compensation and support they deserve for their essential work.

The organizing continued on June 4 with Child Care Is Not a Walk in the Park, a family-friendly day of action featuring games, music, face painting, and community celebration. Providers, parents, children, advocates, and elected officials came together to celebrate the importance of child care while building momentum for lasting policy change. During the event, POP also recognized members of the New York City Council who have demonstrated leadership in supporting child care providers and working families.

Together, these actions reflect the growing strength of child care providers and families organizing for a system that is affordable, equitable, and sustainable. Through leadership development, coalition building, grassroots organizing, and direct advocacy, Providers Organized for Power is working to ensure every family has access to quality child care and every provider receives the respect, resources, and fair compensation they deserve.

Op-Ed | Building a city that values home-based providers

Years ago, New York City took its first steps toward expanding public child care with the creation of Pre-K and 3-K. Those investments changed lives. But as the city expanded access, too many family child care providers — the home-based educators who have long anchored their communities — were left behind.
